201 of the best portfolio websites

Six to ten on the homepage. The instinct to show everything is the instinct of a designer who hasn’t yet learned that *editing is the work*. Showing six strong projects beats showing twenty mediocre ones, every time, in every audience. The math is intuitive: a hiring manager spends 90 seconds on your portfolio. They’re going to look at three projects in detail. If those three projects are pulled from a homepage of twenty, the average quality is lower than if they’re pulled from a homepage of six. Curate ruthlessly. Cut anything you’re not proud of. The portfolio improves the moment you do.

The brief, the constraint that mattered, the decision you made, and the outcome. Most portfolio case studies show only the first and last and skip the load-bearing middle. The constraint and the decision are the parts that demonstrate *how you think*, which is what hiring managers and prospective clients actually want to see. Outcomes matter — but everyone’s outcomes look polished in a case study. What differentiates one designer from another is the visible quality of the thinking that produced the outcome. Show the rejected version. Show the moment the project changed direction. Show what you’d do differently now.

Hide it. Or, if you can’t bear to delete, put it in an "archive" page that isn’t linked from the main navigation. The strongest portfolios in this collection have aggressive editing policies — they remove projects every time they add new ones, so the homepage always represents the designer’s current taste, not their cumulative output. A portfolio is not a CV; it doesn’t need to be exhaustive. It needs to be persuasive.

Framer has become the dominant platform for designer portfolios in 2025 and 2026, particularly among product designers — its component model maps cleanly to how designers think. Webflow remains strong for designers who want more layout flexibility. Cargo and Readymag are favourites for art directors and editorial-leaning designers who want freeform layout control. Next.js is used by designers comfortable with code who want maximum flexibility. Browse Framer portfolios and Webflow portfolios for the dominant patterns.

Slightly. A personal portfolio is for self-expression and serves long-term reputation; a freelance portfolio is a sales tool and needs a clearer call-to-action. The best portfolios in this collection blur the line — they’re personal in voice but commercial in structure. There’s a contact section, the work demonstrates range relevant to hireable disciplines, and there’s a clear signal of what the designer is currently looking for. Pure self-expression portfolios with no contact information are increasingly rare and increasingly impractical.

Whenever you finish a project worth showing. The best portfolios in this collection are updated quarterly at minimum — old work gets cut, new work goes up, the homepage stays current. Portfolios that haven’t been touched in 18 months read as abandoned, regardless of how good the work in them is. The cadence of updates is itself a signal of how seriously the designer takes their public-facing surface.
